Technical Knowledge and Skills

Work experience

June 1996 - Today: June 1996 - Today: Senior Researcher at the Network Management and Optimal Design laboratory (NETMODE) of the National Technical University of Athens. Through this partnership a number of projects were conducted on the topics of Network Analysis, Design, Management, and Security. Some of them included:

Sep. 2003 - Today: Technical Advisor for Databank, the Internet Services Unit of the Technical Chamber of Greece, specializing in the development of new networking services. Developed and implemented Databank's ADSL service.

Dec. 2004 - May 2006: Subcontracted consultant for the Qualco S.A.: Design of the Security Policy, Risk Analysis, and Business Continuation Plan for a big private sector corporation specializing in health services; consulting services for the acquisition of the BS7799 security certification.

May - Jun. 2003: Consulting services for the Qualco S.A. Worked on the design and security policy of the Piraeus Port Authority enterprise network.

Jun. 2000 - Mar. 2001: Principal network and systems administrator for the Hellenic Army's Internet section, while serving on active duty. Ensured the constant, secure and smooth operation of all Internet services. Made major contributions to the node's security design and operations. Reviewed the introduction of various new services and improvements to existing ones.

Jan. 1998 - Sep. 1999: Consultant for the ISP company of the Technical Chamber of Greece. Set up and fine tuned network routing after extensive monitoring and statistics gathering. Through the review of operations:

Apr. 1998 - Apr. 1999: Participation in various pilot projects, under the coordination of the Ministry of Education, for offering advanced networking services for the Greek universities (GUNet). Involvement in the parts of security, multicasting and IPv6

May 1996 - September 1998: Network Operations Center of the National Technical University of Athens. Member of the data network team. The team is responsible for supporting the campus' 6000 user - 1000 host net and the Greek National Research Network (GR-Net) that connects all of the country's educational institutions. Personal responsibilities included:

Aug. 1995 - Feb. 1996: Unix System Administrator in the Geophysics computer lab in the department of Geology of the Athens National University. Responsible for the smooth and effective operation of seismic data workstations, LAN configuration and Internet connectivity.

Mar. - May 1995: Three month part-time employment in Hewlett Packard Hellas in the customer support department (RCO).

Jul. - Aug. 1994: Cooperation with the Institute of Computer Science and Telecommunications of the National Research Center for Physics "Demokritos" on the nationalization of the Hewlett Packard VUE graphical user interface for workstations.

Oct. 1993 - Mar. 1994: Six month technical training by student employment in Oracle Hellas S.A. Work in the nationalization of the company's software (department of Native Language Support).


Teaching Experience

As a PhD candidate, participation in the following courses of the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the NTUA under professor B. Maglaris:

1996 - Today: Teaching Assistant and Lab Supervisor in the course "Network Management and Intelligent Networks", last semester, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical Univ. of Athens. Undertakes the lectures on security.

Apr. 1999: Lectures for the post-graduate course "EDI Value Added Networks and Electronic Commerce", Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical Univ. of Athens, on cryptography and digital certificates/secure transactions.

Additionally, participation in the following teaching activities:

June 2001: Instructor in a two week training course for network technicians of the OTENet ISP.

Jun. 1997 - Today: Lecturer in seminars at the Greek National Centre for Public Administration on the Network Security and the Installation, Management and Secure Operation of Internet Information Services.

Jul. 1999: Instructor on computer security for the Center for continued Education of the National Technical Univ. of Athens.


Research Interests

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and their interaction with network management, general issues in computer security and their theoretical extensions. Design and management of computer networks. Internet Information Services.
